Hollywood icon Elizabeth Taylor has died today aged 79, and RIP Elizabeth Taylor quickly became a trending term on Twitter, as fans paid tribute.

One of her former husbands Richard Burton also featured in the trends list.

Liz had a Twitter page of her own @DameElizabeth, her last tweet coming on February 9th. She wrote: "My interview in Bazaar with Kim Kardashian came out!!! http://j.mp/eqQsGa"

Celebrities were among those to share their memories of the screen legend.

Radio 1 DJ Fearne Cotton wrote: "So sad to hear Elizabeth Taylor has passed away. A hollywood legend. Cat on a hot tin roof is one of my fave films. RIP"
Singer Kylie Minogue referenced Liz Taylor's love of diamonds, which saw her launch the hugely popular White Diamond perfume. Kylie tweeted: "RIP Dame Elizabeth Taylor.....Like a pure white diamond you'll shine on and on and on." Stephen Fry commented: "RIP Dame Elizabeth Taylor, surely the last of a breed..."

Kirstie Alley commented: "Elizabeth...thank u for the lessons u taught me about life..suffering and Joy....you are the BRIGHTEST STAR in the universe..Eternal love" Singer Paloma Faith wrote: "RIP elizabeth taylor. Glamour queen."

CNN host Piers Morgan commented: "BREAKING NEWS: Liz Taylor has died. One of the great movie stars of all time, on and off screen." He added with a link to a classic image: "Surely the greatest screen beauty of them all? http://bit.ly/FpMIQ #RIPLizTaylor"

Piers also picked favourite quotes, sharing: "Advice we should all follow: 'I've always admitted that I'm ruled by my passions.' Elizabeth Taylor" He then added: "And re her passions: 'I've only slept with men I've been married to. How many women can make that claim?' Elizabeth Taylor #goodpoint"
Presenter EamonnHolmes recalled her beauty, writing: "Elizabeth Taylor - people forget she was one hell of an actress and one hell of a good looking woman in her prime. True Star."

Her work in the fight against Aids through the Elizabeth Taylor Aids Foundation was highlighted by actor Antony Cotton, who plays gay Coronation Street factory worker Sean Tully. He wrote: "RIP Elizabeth Taylor. Changed the lives of people living with and suffering from HIV and AIDS, all over the world. Werk! x"

Singer George Michael wrote: "Such a sad day, Elizabeth Taylor was the last of the Hollywood greats, and a fantastically charming woman.

"She was also the only person I've ever met that had violet eyes. They were genuinely violet. So beautiful.

"She also did a great deal in the last 25 yrs to help the world deal with the HIV epidemic. I am proud to have known her if only a little."

Singer Boy George said: "R.I.P the amazing Liz Taylor, goddess, actress, aids activist and one of the world's true beauties!"

And he added a story representing her mischievous side. He wrote: "Liz Taylor was once told by Princess Margaret that her famous diamond ring was 'vulgar' she told PM to try it on.....and said......'Not so vulgar now is it?' Genius and allegedly true!"

Tennis star Serena Williams wrote: "Elizabeth Taylor. Grace style, elegance, legend. You had Beauty the world has ever seen. No words can describe the loss of you."

Burlesque star DitaVonTeese tweeted a picture of her meeting with Liz Taylor. She wrote: "My biggest 'I can't believe this is happening' moment: http://twitpic.com/4ch28t Rest in peace, Divine Liz.
She added: "http://twitpic.com/4ch6wo thank you for your beauty, true glamour, and for all that you did for people with HIV. #LizTaylor"

Singer LeAnn Rimes wrote: "RIP Elizabeth Taylor. It's so amazing how someone has left such a legacy that will forever live on. I am really, truly saddened this morning"

Boxer LennoxLewis tweeted: "R.I.P Elizabeth Taylor: A True Legend"

I found out about this from a friend a few hours ago and I couldn't believe it! I knew about her disease and at this age I should have expected it. It's just so sad how all those great people leave us alone so soon. They are the ones who shaped the media and who were the first ones to hit this generation with their talent!
Elizabeth was a great actress, woman and human being! Rest In Peace! I love you Elizabeth!
