Frankie Boyle confronted by mum of Down's syndrome girl after mocking sufferers at gig

Post by Smooth Criminal on Tue Apr 13, 2010 2:25 am

Comic Frankie Boyle was confronted by the mum of a Down's syndrome girl during a show after he crudely poked fun at sufferers.

Sharon Smith, 37 - whose daughter Tanzie, five, is a Down's child - was in the front row when he ridiculed those with the condition as "Mongoloids" and mocked their speech and short life expectancy.

Near to tears, the mum made clear she was upset but the unrepentant star insisted his slurs were true and she should have known what to expect from him.

Sharon said: "He then said it was the last tour ever and he didn't give a f***." The mum, a former marketing executive, went on: "Throughout the show he made fun of disabled people.

"But when given an opening he launched into a puerile, childish and ignorant attack on Down's syndrome sufferers.

"I expected dry, nasty, crude humour. But unimaginative humour poking fun at the stereotype of people with Down's syn-drome wasn't something that I expected.

"He made fun of the way people with Down's syndrome speak. He made references to them dying early. I was very upset and wanted to cry.

"I couldn't believe someone as influential, famous and supposedly clever was going back to such out-of-date stereotypes."

Sharon, of Hook, Hants, and husband Keiron had been looking forward to Wednesday's show in Reading, Berks. But they were appalled as Frankie, 37, a former panellist on BBC2's Mock The made Week, began his tirade.

Keiron said: "He used words like Mongoloid. And one joke was, 'Why is it that everyone with Down's syndrome has bowl haircuts and bad clothes?'

"He came back three times to the idea people with Down's syndrome die early. It was like a throwback to the 1970s."

As he and his wife discussed his rant, Frankie asked why they were talking. Sharon explained: "I said, 'My daughter is five, she has Down's syndrome and we're upset by some of your comments'.

"Instead of saying he was sorry, he said, 'It's all true, isn't it?'

"He said it was the most excru-ciating moment of his career but tried to claw the humour back by saying we paid to see him and what should we expect." The star's spokesman would not com-ment last night.

Only just read this article this mornin, im not realy a fan of his but have seen some of his stuff n i dont really like his humour.... that sorta joke is disgustin... i mean i know most comedians mock all sorts of stuff & i suppose you kinda expect this sorta stuff but i think he went a bit too far, the least he could of done was said sorry.

He will never be as funny as Jimmy Carr, Peter Kay, Alan Carr or Lee Evans - the best in comedy i think!!!

me and lee had abit of a row over this....i agree with the mum. and to quote so many on saying theres a thin line between funny and offending.

I'm not a fan of frankie boyle, i've seen his stuff from mock the week and one of his stand up dvd's (lee likes him)
i don't find how making fun of downs is funny to please or any disability for that matter.
